Addressing a Question from the 10/10 Way Forward Task Force Presentation
There was an unanswered question asked in Monday night’s Way Forward Committee meeting that we would like to address. The question was: Are there any other Methodist churches in the upstate of South Carolina currently in the disaffiliation process? The answer is that 80 churches (and growing) in South Carolina have joined the SC Traditional Methodist Lay Leadership Group to explore and, in many cases, pursue, disaffiliation. The group was formed to educate laity on what is happening in the UMC and provide resources to SC UMC churches exploring disaffiliation. Bishop Holston has indicated that he and his task force will provide a fair and gracious means for disaffiliation around October 30. The path could be through 2549, and the anticipated exit fee could be two years worth of apportionments and the unfunded pension liability. If this is our path, the estimate cost to own our property and all resources would be $1.2 million, which is the number also estimated by the Buncombe Street Way Forward Task Force. |
