Working Together To Determine the Future of Buncombe Street

With the further delay of the United Methodist Church General Conference vote and as laypersons concerned for the future of Buncombe Street, we believe it is time for our church to explore the issues, have open discussion about our vision for Buncombe Street, and decide whether our church should continue to be a part of the United Methodist Church, affiliate with the Global Methodist Church, or consider other alternatives.

The petition was presented Tuesday evening, April 12, to our Church Council for discussion. The result was overwhelmingly in support of having a congregational vote in the fall. The vote in the Fall will determine whether our church will continue our affiliation with the UMC or disaffiliate and affiliate with another conference.

We are very encouraged and thankful for the support shown by the congregation and the Church Council in our effort to give every Buncombe Street member a say in the future of our church. Thank you to those who supported our efforts by signing the petition.

In a letter from our clergy, the congregation was reminded – as we embark on the holiest of days leading up to Easter may we all be of the same mind and purpose regarding the sacrifice and gift of Jesus in his death and resurrection. May we be committed to be disciples of Jesus by showing grace and love “so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power” (1 Cor 1:17).

May we all be of One Heart as we approach Easter together.

Dear Members of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church,

As concerned lay leaders of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church, we have formed the Friends to Preserve Buncombe Street to address how the inevitable split of the United Methodist Church and the continued delay of the General Conference vote affect our beloved church. We do not believe we can be One Church until we, as a local congregation, explore the issues, agree on our church theology, and decide whether to continue to be a part of the United Methodist Church.

Our Traditions:

Buncombe Street, founded in 1834 as the Greenville Methodist Church, has worked diligently to serve the Greenville community in making disciples of Christ. Through several denominational and name changes over the years, Buncombe Street has not only survived but adapted and thrived as a leading congregation in our state and region. Our congregation consists of approximately 3,000 members and has always had talented, foresighted, and committed members with a vision for our future. As a historic decision faces our church, we are confident our members will want to prayerfully take a stand on our Christ-centered beliefs as we protect the ideals of our church.

Our Values:

Since its inception, Buncombe Street has affirmed classical Wesleyan doctrine by standing on the truth of God’s teaching and the authenticity of scripture. This framework has been used to define the parameters of Christian teaching within our local church and as we serve others in our community. Our Methodist heritage has served as a cornerstone of our faith. We believe, however, that we are first and foremost followers of Christ and not followers of an institution. As many in the worldwide church conform to the culture of our world, we stand firm in the gospel of the risen Christ and the authority of God’s word.

Our Future:

We want to continue to stand boldly for our faith and our congregation. We want to serve our community as we grow, thrive, and make disciples for Christ. We want to unite as a Christian community and hold fast to our theology, while always looking first to Christ and scripture as our guide. Buncombe Street has been a beacon of light and hope to many for 188 years. May we continue to shepherd others to Christ through truth, stewardship, vision, and excellence!

Today:

In the summer of 2019, a mediation team was formed by some leaders of the United Methodist Church. Then early in 2020, called for the passage of a compromise called the Protocol of Reconciliation and Grace Through Separation. Due to the pandemic, the vote was rescheduled for 2022, then recently was postponed again until 2024. With another postponement, there are a number of United Methodist clergy and congregation members who believe we will never be able to amicably resolve the decades-long disputes within the United Methodist Conference.

Due to increasing theological differences, many believe we have reached the point in which separation is likely the only path. The fate of the Protocol mentioned above, which provided a way to an amicable separation, is very uncertain. There are indications that some United Methodist bishops and annual conference leaders are proposing separation terms that are no longer amicable but are instead political, burdensome, and full of bureaucracy.

For these reasons and more, we, the Friends to Preserve Buncombe Street, believe that our church is at a historic crossroads.

With the further delay of the General Conference vote, we feel that waiting two more years could be devastating to our membership and ministries at Buncombe Street. We believe that now is the time to take a stand on our beliefs and do what we feel is best for our church. We have observed many growing and thriving United Methodist Churches that are months or a year ahead of us in this process. Many of these churches have already voted on whether to disaffiliate.

We believe that now is the time to preserve the legacy and community of Buncombe Street with our primary goal being to make disciples of Christ.

We believe that now is the time for our church to be in communal prayer and conversation about the future of Buncombe Street. We believe now is the time for Buncombe Street to become educated about our options, determine what we believe, and prepare to call for a vote this fall so we can move forward with our goal of bringing disciples to Christ.
