Update from the Friends to Preserve Buncombe Street

We Are Encouraged!

A few weeks ago, Bishop Jonathan Holston announced he would be putting together a task force to explore disaffiliation options for UMC churches in South Carolina.

When Bishop Holston met with members of Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church in July, he said he would select the members of the Task Force in August, meet in September, and present their recommendations in October.

As promised, he has assembled the members of his Task Force and their first meeting will be this Tuesday, September 6, at Journey United Methodist Church in Columbia. We are thankful and encouraged by Bishop Holston’s actions.

The Way Forward Task Force Presentation

The slides below were part of the Theological Considerations Presentation given Tuesday by members of the Way Forward Task Force at Buncombe Street. We appreciate the work being done by this committee.

This meeting covered the most important issues that we all must decide upon as we each prayerfully examine our beliefs during our period of discernment preceding our church vote on October 30th, including:

• Do you believe in the Resurrection of Jesus?

• Do you believe that Jesus is the ONLY way to Heaven?

• Do you believe in the Virgin birth of Jesus?

• Do you believe in the Authority, Interpretation and the Inerrancy of Scripture?

Our answer is a resounding “YES!”

Across the country, churches with our shared traditional values are leaving the UMC, because many in the UMC are allowing (and encouraging) the leadership of the denomination to espouse a theology that refutes the below core beliefs of traditional members.

Should Buncombe Street remain in the UMC, it’s just a matter of time before we experience these changes. We pray that Buncombe Street will continue to stand for truth. To view the entire presentation from Tuesday, click here.
